CONTINUED.... These Stepping Stone houses add a needed resource to our newest program CITY (Coaching Independence in Transitional Youth) developed to provide services and supports to youth as they age out of the foster care system. The County Board of Supervisors approved the lease last August launching the transformation process.
Over the months the buildings were topped with new roofs, received new windows, and were painted inside and out in warm, inviting tones. In the largest 2,600 square foot house a new bathroom was carved out of old closet space. New tile was installed on the bathroom floors and shower walls of each house. Wonderful vinyl flooring that passes for genuine hardwood material and new carpeting now grace the floors. With a generous grant from the Pentair Foundation new appliances were ordered for each of the houses. And, with the help of many community members, especially the Girls on a Mission group from Westlake Village, the houses were completed with furniture, linens, home accessories, kitchen wares, and more. Other community members came together over the months to prepare the property for landscaping. Suzanne Baird volunteered her landscape design services and developed a plan for the grounds that includes a vegetable garden, herb garden, orchard, children’s play area, meandering paths, and a large lawn area suitable for outdoor events. A group of Amgen executives came and further cleared the land from initial efforts by the California Conservation Corps, and staff from WellPoint/Anthem spent their Community Service Project Day delineating the landscape areas. Casa Pacifica Board Member John Broome sent over work crews from his company with heavy equipment to finish the final leveling and preparation for an irrigation system. A new rod iron fence and gates surround the property, and a driveway and parking area was donated by Granite Construction and Board Member Bill Powell. The CITY Program & Stepping Stone Houses opened to residents on June 11, 2012. The grand opening ceremony was covered by the media:
